Markgräfliches Palais — branding design

The Markgräfliches Palais in Karlsruhe, Germany, gets a new look! PSD Bank commissioned a long-term, cross-media communication concept for Karlsruhe’s Margravial Palace, with the intention of developing a positive attitude in the entire city society towards the conversion and revitalization of the historic building.

Christopher Karl from MATHOKA designed the concept with the Spitzkant typeface for the logo and the headlines. Christopher playfully utilized the whole range of ligatures and alternative letters of Spitzkant, transforming the concept into a very unique and characteristic branding experience.

The Markgräfliches Palais – the palatial residence – was originally commissioned by Grand Duke Karl Friedrich von Baden for his second wife Luise Karoline and built according to plans by famous local architect Friedrich Weinbrenner.

In the spirit of Weinbrenner, PSD Bank wants to bring a “breath of fresh air” to the district with the redesign and make the Margravial Palace usable for everyone in Karlsruhe. Once the construction work is complete, retail outlets, businesses, new cafés and restaurants will move in here and benches will be installed along the street for people to linger. The rooms in the central building directly on the Rondellpaltz can be rented for private and public events in future – family celebrations, weddings, anniversaries or company parties will be held here. An attractive garden area will be created behind the building, which will be accessible from the cafés and restaurants. This will beautify the entire area around the Margravial Palace and fill it with new life.
